“21.09.2013 – a day to remember” – a players viewpoint

The day arrived – 21 September, the last tournament of the year.
Who would imagine the year flying by so fast.

Waldkirch golf club was the location – a great spot for a great finish with a vast array of courses, greens and a range for that last minute brush-up of our golf swings and putts.

The day kicked off smoothly and it almost went without notice that we were nearly 60 people participating in the tournament.

We were welcomed with an impressive golf pack for the finale – a luxury golf towel sponsored by TCL (Transition Consulting Limited) , a gift voucher for reduced fees with Golf Pro Brian Murphy at Golfpoint Urdorf (to keep those swings polished over the winter) and a welcoming lip balm, chockies and an extra golf ball sponsored by Stamford Consultants. What a great start!

The front 9 proved to be somewhat challenging – blind layups, narrow and uphill fairways and challenging greens kept our minds sharp and attentive. Thank goodness for the delicious lunch pack sponsored by Koru Lounge and Bar which helped fuel our bodies and minds for the duration of the day.

With a smooth transition from the green to the blue course, the back 9 continued to offer challenge and surprise.
Alas, no one ended up grabbing the Raleigh E-Bike sponsored prize for the first hole in one of the season but that was well made up by some great longest drive shots. Murray Sparks grabbed first prize on the men’s side with a solid drive early in the day which remained unbeaten and Alison Taylor, the solid 2 handicap golfer who gave all the men a run for their money, banked the ladies’ prize.  Nearest to the Pin on the 9th was won by Gail Hess at just over 4m with the narrowest miss of a birdie.  And if birdies are not enough of a challenge, Jürgen landed up with an impressive Eagle on hole 12, having taken a chip out the rough which faithfully followed its course into the hole 🙂 What a great finish.

September weather can prove to be volatile. However, the weather gods clearly are golfers 🙂 we had the most remarkable blue sky and sun as additional companions over the course of the day.

The golfers gradually trickled in to hole 19 and enjoyed their well-deserved glass of beer with the buzz in the air growing gradually in anticipation of who would be the ultimate Tigers and Rabbits of the season.
After a most delicious apero with plates of food continuing to roll in, the prize giving-kicked off.

First was the results for the day, with a large number of golfers scoring over 35 net points. The year clearly paid off for some!
This was followed by the eagerly anticipated Rabbits and Tigers leaderboard awards with 2nd in line walking away with a brand new bike from Raleigh. Freddy gained 2nd place in the Rabbits category and could hardly contain his glee, weighed down only by the bike which he was victoriously holding up high in his arms.

On the Tigers side, Rainer took 2nd place with an grin from ear to ear.

And the winners of the leaderboards… walking away with a brand new set of TaylorMade irons – what a great prize.  Nina Zweifel won the Rabbits category with Jay Gilbert walking away in victory in the Tigers category. I’m sure those irons will be put to good use.

And it didn’t end there – great spot prizes, the season final draw, a special christmas raffle, a ladies draw – they were then given away with the eager crowd listening for their name despite the chill of the evening slowly setting in.

Many thanks to Nora for the most successful day and a brilliant year of golf. Needless to say, all our sponsors make the event possible and last but not least each one of us.

T’was a great season indeed – keep in touch, keep those golf swings in gear and see you in 2014.
